LOVE

I haven’t seen you for a month or so.
No change. Perhaps I’m pale rather than fair,
sleepier, more silent. It shows
you can live without air.

Welcome! This site is devoted to one of the greatest Polish poets, Maria Pawlikowska-Jasnorzewska (born in Kraków 1891, died in Manchester 1945). Born into a family of artists, she was an extraordinary woman and created extraordinary work. She is famous in Poland but barely known outside the country. We have been translating her work for over twenty years, and there is a bilingual edition of her selected poems available in Poland Motyle/Butterflies, published by Wydawnictwo Literackie:

Now 70 years have passed since her death and it’s high time her writings and life story became available to the English-speaking world. We hope this website will begin to fill the gap.
